The Ladder of Conscious Competence
1. Unconscious incompetence
I don't understand or know how to do something, I don't even know that I need to know it.
I am comfortable because I don't know yet what it is I need to learn.
2. Conscious incompetence
I don't understand or know how to do something, but I do know what it is I need to learn.
This is frustrating.
3. Conscious competence
I understand or know how to do something but doing it or using the knowledge requires a great deal of concentration.
This makes it difficult and stressful to do anything else at the same time but I can see I'm making progress.
4. Unconscious competence
I have had so much practice with a skill that it is "second nature" and can be performed easily without concentrating too deeply. I can also teach it to others.
I might be a bit too comfortable and unwilling to try new ways of doing things.
