Didnt want to hijack sarahs thread so this is my own version !

Ok so I have to write a 10,000 word dissertation on a subject in education, this obviously needs to be something I can relate to if im to stand a chance of getting anywhere with it !
I have visited mixed age classes before for an essay on groupwork BUT have decided to revisit this from a slightly different angle this time .
I want to research whether pupils in a mixed age class set up have an academic advantage over a single year class .
We have been advised that we need to think who exactly we are doing this research for,It can (interestingly) be just for ourselves (do you see where im going with this ?)
My thinking is,although I wont be able to change anything as a result of this research, It will be extreamly important to my professional development and enable me to make future decisions affecting employment .
Doing this research will (i hope) equip me with all the background research about single year classes (something ive never experienced myself)

I want to include good old Vygotsky etc (of course !!!)
Maybe look at how other countries do it ?

Having worked in a mixed age /stage class for 12 yrs I can see many advantages BUT i know want to look from the other side, what about the disadvantages ?
What makes parents choose a mixed class system - what makes parents choose a single year per class system?
I want to look at the world how it is (a different form of research from my last one ) .
Have to have a 1000 word proposal in by begining of November and the 9000 word dissertation by March next year . What do you think ???

sounds good to me - wondering if you could swing an overseas visit to view how it is done in other countries - America would be good lol

Hi.
Quick question- How are you going to prove or disprove your argument? How are you going to quantify your results. Don't forget to pay due credence to other factors which can affect results. Do parents and schools actually choose to have mixed age class system or is it purely logistical? Not something I know much about. Would be interesting to hear more.

Run it past your tutor, you should have a 121 session, just to make sure you are on the right track. Listen carefully as they are very careful in telling you what is needed but won't tell you directly, lots of reading between the lines. You must be able to draw conclusions from your data, evidence your data and how you came to your conclusions. What type of research are you doing quantative or qualitative, using hard or soft data? Sorry if I'm being a bit hard but finished my Hons this year and the majority of my lecturers were about research.
