learning through play assignment Empty learning through play assignment

Hi all

I work in a year one unit where i thought we all believed the importancy of the continuity of the children learning through play.(Which i am doing a project on at uni)
But today i was talking to one of the staff in the team who told me she thought the children wasnt learning anything and were just playing all day(that was putting it politely)
i was just wondering if anybody else has had a similar conversation or thinks likes this?
Her remark shocked me a bit with her working in the unit and she as never showed her concerns with the managers.

woah obviously she is not facillitating(!)
I wonder if she is stagnating in there
I have to say I used to think they played all day but now I've had more experience I can see how much more thought goes into planning activities how independent the children are and how a good facilitator can nudge children's learning through play into the area they need to go. Yes year 1 need to do some 'official' learning with a teacher or t.a. but I no longer think children are playing

I was trying to explain this to her, we have adult led tables, adult challenge tables and also phonic sessions, I just think if she stood back and did more observations she would realise the learning why is going on in there x

I was many years ago of the thought that they were just playing and not learning. However since beginning my own learning journey I can see the links with learning and especially as you said you have adult led 'play' activities.

Children learn best when learning is natural, maybe she does not see this yet. What is her background? Maybe you could steer her way of thinking and broaden her views a little.

last year she worked in the foundation stage so i thought she should really recognise how important play is to a child's development.
i am writing an assignment on it at uni, i have written so back ground info on the subject i was wondering if anybody knows of any good books i could use to back up my findings?
many thanks
